This year’s Pelwatte Rally was something different for Dinesh as he was navigated by Sanjaya Roshan instead of his usual co-driver Mushtaq Ahamed who was not available to team up with him.
It was also a landmark rally for Sri Lanka as it was the first occasion any rally that exceeded 150km of Special Stage rallying. The total distance of the rally consisted of 192km on gravel surface which was a real test of endurance for the driver and the machine.
The rally was very closely contested by top rally drivers such as Aravinda Premadasa, Rizvi Farouk and Reyaz Farook. Dinesh made a strong come back in the night stage where he was quicker over 45 seconds over his rivals.
Dinesh was faced with some unexpected mechanical problems towards the end of Saturday which worsened during the day stages on Sunday. However with over 13 years of experience in driving Evo’s Dinesh nursed the car to the end of the rally where he finished 3rd overall. This positioned him as third in the current National Rally Championship.
